The City: Lisbon

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and its largest city. It is recognized as an alpha-level global city because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. It offers a rich and varied history, a buzzing nightlife and a glorious year-round climate. The city received two worlds travel awards in 2008 for being the world’s leading city destination and Europe’s leading city destination. In addition it was declared one of the oldest cities in the world, and one of the oldest in Western Europe. Lisbon lies in the Western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus, and it is distributed in 8 different regions (see map).
